Our 12 Month Family Microadventures Project

Our 12 Month Family Microadventures Project

This blog is all about trying to be more adventurous so with that in mind, welcome to our 12 Month Family Microadventures Project!

We’re coming to the end of the 2016, and let’s be honest it’s been a challenging year in many ways. Politics, the state of our planet, media and world events are sometimes overwhelming in their negative aspects. What we need is fresh hope and inspiration, and that starts with us as individuals. So what better than to create something new and positive, even in a small way, for the forthcoming year? So to kick off 2017 we will be setting ourselves a monthly challenge that will get us active in the great outdoors and having fun together on a regular basis!

If you aren’t familiar with the term, you may be wondering exactly what a microadventure is… in a nutshell it’s an adventure experience that can be completed in a short time slot (a day or weekend), is affordable and accessible to us ordinary mortals, relatively easy to organise yet presents us with a reasonable challenge. It takes us out of our comfort zone and ideally into the great outdoors. I admit I’m a bit allergic to the cold, so winter adventures will require a little metal no doubt, but all the better. I feel the need to push myself out of my comfortable nest where I tend to retreat by a warm log fire with a hot chocolate at this time of year!

I’ve recently been inspired by Alastair Humphreys, who popularised the term ‘microadventure’ and has even written a book on the subject. I love his positive, outdoors loving, down-to-earth attitude. When he describes the satisfaction of waking at dawn after sleeping on a chilly hill in a bivvy bag, I wonder if I can really do that, but he makes me want to give it a try. Importantly, as a family these kind of experiences can help us develop self reliance and trust in our own abilities and in each other.

I’ll be posting monthly on the results of our 2017 Family Microadventure Project which you can access here or from ‘Microadventure Project’ on the homepage, or you can subscribe for updates.

If you are planning to create some of your own microadventures and need a bit of inspiration on where to start, you can access and download our 35 FAMILY MICROADVENTURE IDEAS PDF FOR FREE! And we’d love you to share your microadventures with us on Instagram by using the hashtag #familymicroadventureproject where you can also follow our microadventures.

Good luck and remember the great cliché, “life begins at the end of your comfort zone”!
