Hello, my name is Irina and I am going to run a Marathon... or three!

Blog by

On the first day of Lockdown 2.0, I signed up for the Brighton Marathon, scheduled for September 12th 2021.

When I say ‘I’, I mean ‘we’, which effectively means my husband signed us up for it and I didn’t give it much thought, which is probably the only way to do it. By the time it really hit me, we had already paid the registration fees and were receiving emails from the organisers. When I say ‘we’ I mean ‘I’ as Doug had pulled out of the marathon claiming injury! (He even went as far as having a knee operation to prove his point.)

I had no idea how the next few months would work out, but I did feel it would be an insightful, interesting but also quite scary journey. ‘Undulating’ is the best word I can think of to describe it. It’s a well-kept secret however, that when someone describes a route as undulating what they really mean is, HILLY.

I decided to start writing a blog hoping to have some company along the way. I had so many thoughts and questions about running, which I really wanted to share. Maybe some funny stories? Maybe some tears? For sure! There were lots of tears. But mostly I wanted to share the joy of running and what it brings to my life, body and soul. That’s how it began.

Turns out I shared a whole lot more! From 2021 until the end of 2022 I wrote over 30 short stories. I tackled my demons and fears, I shared moments of enlightment and triumph, but I also went to all the dark rooms, and slowly, slowly opened up the doors to let light in.

And then I stopped. The reason? I will eventually tell you all about it. I lost all inspiration and putting anything down on paper seemed impossible. Until today. Why today? I don’t know. Maybe because I am just about to run my 3rd marathon in a weeks time. Maybe because the sun is shining and I’ve had a good night’s sleep (both rare occurrences!).

Somehow, I feel that what’s stopped me writing for a year is the flipside of what’s spurred me on to restart today. Sometimes you’ve just got to go with it, and sit in silence, and other times you just need trust the fire in the belly. Sometimes you just gotta ROAR and hope people will hear you. Today is one of those days.

I am here to continue my journey, and I need to roar louder than ever before: SHARING MAKES LIFE LESS SCARY AND MORE EXCITING.

Can you hear me?

Irina Boscou-Ward was born in Greece in 1974. In 2016, she moved to the UK for love. Against all odds, she doesn’t mind the English weather and loves living in the beautiful countryside of West Sussex with her husband (Doug), her step-son and their 2 dogs.
She runs for the headspace and the euphoria she feels when it’s done.
She writes about life and running because she believes that sharing makes life more exciting and less scary.

Love this? Know someone else who would?
Share the adventure!
